language

India is a large country. Consider following statistics about languages used –

  1. People speak 780 different languages and use 86 different scripts
  2. 250 languages were lost in last 50 years
  3. Many languages are on the verge of extinction. For ex – Majhi is spoken by just one people in Indian state of Sikkim.

Extrapolate the above data for world and the numbers will be huge.

How it is important to a self learning course. The existing courses are in the form of videos which has audio too which is a expectation. Should audio be in local languages which is what people understand or can we standardize between English and Hindi as these two languages are binding factors in India. Within a language also people could have problems with accent. How does a course takes care of such scenarios.

When we started our work there were always two views about audio – one said that students would be more comfortable if they listen things in their native language. Another group said that they are expected to be good in English so the option of native language should not be there.

Both were correct. But we questioned the need of audio itself. Our courses are not exactly videos which are passive. They are practice as you go along. You perform the task in actual application and the course progresses. No more just watching and hearing but ours is learning by doing so do we need audio. Our learners confirmed this. Initially they expected audio but found that they don’t actually need it because the paradigm is different.

And the icing on the cake is though our courses are in English – students don’t need to be knowing English as it is like a instructor sitting behind and guiding you as you practice. They could also learn after initial learning curve.
