1. Using the Run Prompt
- Step 1: Launch the Run prompt by pressing the Windows key + R.
- Step 2: Type in Sysdm.cpl and press Enter to open the System properties prompt.
- Step 3: Select the Advanced tab.
- Step 4:Go to Startup and Recovery > Settings
- Step 5: In System failure, uncheck Automatically restart.
- Step 6: Click OK to implement your changes.
2. Enable the No Auto-Restart Policy
- Step 1: Launch the Run prompt by pressing the Windows key + R and type:Gpedit.msc
- Step 2: This opens the Local Group Policy Editor. In that, go to: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update.
- Step 3: Double-click the “No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic update installations.”
- Step 4: Click OK to implement changes.
- Step 5: To implement these changes without restarting the computer, launch the Command Prompt using Windows Key + R to launch Run, and type in cmd.
- Step 6: Type the following: gpupdate /force.
3. Disable Auto-Reboot Using Registry Editor
This method entails making changes to the Windows Registry. Before making any changes, you should make a backup of your Registry settings. Power users who want to automate the procedure of removing automatic Windows restart will find this solution useful.
- Step 1: Launch the Registry Editor by typing regedit in the Run prompt. Press Enter.
- Step 2: On the left pane, go to: HKEY_Local_Machine –> Software –> Policies –> Microsoft –> Windows.
- Step 3: Right-click on Windows > New > Key.
- Step 4: Add WindowsUpdate as the new folder name. Then right-click Windows Update > New > Key. Put AU as the new folder name.
- Step 5: Now, in the left pane, click the AU key, and in the right pane, right-click the blank area. Select DWORD (32-Bit) Value from New.
- Step 6: Rename DWORD as NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers.
- Step 6: Rename DWORD as NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers.
4. Disable Auto-Reboot using the Task Scheduler
Windows 10 is set to reboot after downloading and installing Windows Updates by default. This is a task which is already booked in the Task Scheduler. This program is used to automate a set of actions or to conduct tasks that are initiated by an event.
- Step 1: Open Task Scheduler: Run –> type in taskschd.msc.
- Step 2: In the Task Scheduler, on the left pane, go to: Task Scheduler Library –> Microsoft –> Windows –> Updateorchestrator
- Step 3: Right-click Reboot_AC > Disable
- Step 4: Right-click Reboot_Battery > Disable
By implementing the above steps, your PC will not restart automatically.
